Be seen
- Give every kid a flashlight or glow stick, and put reflective tape or stickers on costumes and treat bags.
- Pick bright, light-colored costumes, short enough not to trip on.
- Face paint and hats beat masks, which can block a child's view.
Walking out there
- Go with kids under 12. Older kids should stay in a group, on a route you know, and check in.
- A lot of Polk County has no sidewalks. Walk facing traffic, single file, on the far edge of the road.
- Cross at corners and intersections. Don't dart out between parked cars.
If you're driving
- Children are more than twice as likely to be hit and killed by a car on Halloween than on any other day.
- Slow down in neighborhoods and near trunk-or-treats, and watch for kids crossing mid-block, especially at dusk.
- Heading to a party? Plan a sober ride home.
Candy check
- Feed kids before they go so they're not snacking from the bag.
- Eat only commercially wrapped treats. Toss anything with pinholes, tears or an odd look.
- Food allergy? Read every label before anything gets eaten.
Costumes & makeup
- Look for "flame resistant" on the costume label.
- Test face paint on a small patch of arm a day or two ahead.
- Skip non-prescription colored contact lenses. The FDA says they can injure eyes.
At home
- Use battery candles or LED lights in jack-o'-lanterns instead of flames.
- Leave the porch light on and clear the walk of cords, hoses and decorations kids could trip on.
- Keep dogs inside. A doorbell every five minutes and a parade of masks stresses even friendly pets.
